Tao Te Ching · 47 of 81
Without going outside his door, one understands (all that takes place) under the sky; without looking out from his window, one sees the Tao of Heaven. The farther that one goes out (from himself), the less he knows.
Therefore the sages got their knowledge without travelling; gave their (right) names to things without seeing them; and accomplished their ends without any purpose of doing so.

How can someone “understand (all that takes place) under the sky” without leaving home?
Lao Tzu says understanding comes from inward stillness: “without going outside his door, one understands (all that takes place) under the sky” and “without looking out from his window, one sees the Tao of Heaven.” The chapter presents knowing as an achieved clarity that doesn’t rely on external travel or accumulation of facts.
The sages in the chapter “got their knowledge without travelling” and “accomplished their ends without any purpose of doing so,” which means their way of knowing is aligned with observing processes and letting insight arise. This echoes Zhuangzi’s contrast between diminishing effort and increasing learning in Chuang Tzu, where simplicity and inner attentiveness reveal the Tao.
