Mandala 1: HYMN XCIX. Agni.

1.FOR Jātavedas let us press the Soma: may he consume the wealth of the malignant. May Agni carry us through all our troubles, through grief as in a boat across the river.

Asked of Guide

Why do they ask Agni to carry them 'through grief as in a boat across the river'?

The hymn asks Agni to be a conveyance from danger and sorrow, calling him to “carry us through all our troubles.” Agni functions as a protector and guide whose power moves the worshippers past suffering the way a boat moves across a river.

This image treats grief as a boundary to be crossed and Agni as the ritual force that transports the community into safety. The metaphor echoes other hymns in the Rig Veda where fire or Soma effects passage; see Hymn I.1 where invoking a deity secures movement from peril into well-being.
