Mandala 10: HYMN CLXXXVIII. Agni.

1.Now send ye Jātavedas forth, send hitherward the vigorous Steed To seat him on our sacred grass.

2.I raise the lofty eulogy of Jātavedas, raining boons, With sages for his hero band.

3.With flames of Jātavedas which carry oblation to the Gods, May he promote our sacrifice.

Asked of Guide

Why does this hymn call Agni 'Jātavedas' and ask to 'send' him to the sacrifice?

The hymn calls Agni Jātavedas as a functional name: Jātavedas means the-knower-of-sacrifice and the one who bears the oblation. The three short verses ask the priests to send that vigorous Steed so Agni will sit on the sacred grass and carry the offering “with flames…which carry oblation to the Gods.”

The ritual request treats Agni as an active presence who must be invoked and brought to the altar to “promote our sacrifice” and “rain boons.” This is the same role of Agni emphasized elsewhere in the Rigveda and in later Vedic manuals, where Agni is the mediator who conveys gifts and secures benefits for the sacrificer.
