Bell records, almost as an afterthought, that the same Hārūt-Mārūt legend appears in the Talmud under the names Asa and Asael, two angels suspended by chains over an abyss in a great mountain, who taught Solomon wisdom. The Babylonian Talmud (Yoma 67b) and the rabbinic Pirqe de-Rabbi Eliezer carry versions of this story, which itself draws on the much older Book of the Watchers in 1 Enoch: the fallen angels who descended to take human wives and were chained beneath the earth. Quranic legendarium, Talmudic legendarium, and the older Enochic apocalyptic stream are not three independent stories. They are one body of Near Eastern fallen-angel tradition flowing through three religious vocabularies. When Hafiz invokes Zuhra and her two angel-teachers, he is calling on a story that Hebrew, Aramaic, and Arabic-speaking readers had been turning over together for fifteen centuries.
