Gospel of Mary · 4 of 6
Mary and Jesus
1.They, however, were sad and wept greatly, saying: “How shall we go to the Gentiles to preach the gospel of the kingdom of the Son of Man?”
2.“If they did not spare him, how will they spare us?”
3.Then Mary stood up, greeted all of them, and said to her brethren:
4.“Do not weep and do not be sad, nor waver, because all of his grace will be with you, even to protect you.
5.But we should instead praise his greatness, because he has ‹united› us and made us into human beings.”
6.When Mary had said these things, she guided their heart toward the Good, and they began to wrestle over the words of the [Savior].
7.Peter said to Mary: “Sister, we are aware that the Savior loved you more than other women.
8.Tell us the words of the Savior that you can recall, that you know but we do not, and that we have not heard.”
9.Mary replied: “What is concealed from you, I will declare to you.”
10.And she began to speak to them these words. “I,” she said, “I saw the Lord in a vision, and I said to him: ‘Lord, today I saw you in a vision.’
11.“He replied, saying to me: ‘Blessed are you, because you wavered not when you saw me,
12.because where the mind is, there the treasure is.’
13.“I said to him: ‘Lord, now he who sees a vision, does he see it ‹with› the soul ‹or› the spirit?’
14.“The Savior replied, and said: ‘He sees it neither with the soul nor with the spirit, but it is the mind, which mediates between these two, that sees the vision, even it is […].”
[Pages 11–14 of the Berlin Codex are missing. The account resumes in the next chapter with the soul’s ascent already under way.]
Asked of Guide
Why do the disciples weep, and how does Mary answer them?
The disciples weep because they fear for their safety and the future mission after seeing how the Savior was treated: “If they did not spare him, how will they spare us?” Mary tells them to stop grieving and steadies them with assurance that the Savior’s grace remains with them to “protect you” and that they should “praise his greatness” for having united them and made them human.
Mary then redirects them from fear to teaching by sharing a private vision the Savior gave her, and she insists she will reveal what is “concealed” from the others. Her account emphasizes inner knowing: the Savior locates vision in the mind as the mediator between soul and spirit, a point that connects to Gnostic themes also found in texts like the Apocryphon of John about inner knowledge.
