Secrets of Enoch: Chapter XXXVII

XXXVII.

Here God summons an angel.

1.AND the Lord called up one of the older angels, terrible and menacing, and placed him by me, in appearance white as snow, and his hands like ice, having the appearance of great frost, and he froze my face, because I could not endure the terror of the Lord, just as it is not possible to endure a stove’s fire and the sun’s heat, and the frost of the air.

2.And the Lord said to me: ‘Enoch, if thy face be not frozen here, no man will be able to behold thy face.’

Asked of Guide

Why does God have an angel freeze Enoch's face before he sees God's face?

God sends an older angel who is “white as snow” with “hands like ice” to freeze Enoch’s face so Enoch can survive the encounter; the text says the angel “froze my face, because I could not endure the terror of the Lord.” This is a practical preparation: the angel’s frost buffers Enoch against divine radiance and terror.

The chapter explains the purpose plainly: God warns, “if thy face be not frozen here, no man will be able to behold thy face.” This echoes Old Testament moments where a mediator shields humans from God’s glory, similar to Moses’ veiling in Exodus.
