Chapter II

1.Observe ye everything that takes place in the heaven, how they do not change their orbits, [and] the luminaries which are in the heaven, how they all rise and set in order each in its season, and transgress not against their appointed order.

2.Behold ye the earth, and give heed to the things which take place upon it from first to last, [how steadfast they are], how [none of the things upon earth] change, [but] all the works of God appear [to you].

3.Behold the summer and the winter, [how the whole earth is filled with water, and clouds and dew and rain lie upon it].

Asked of Guide

Why does the chapter insist the heavens and earth “transgress not against their appointed order”?

The chapter emphasizes that the heavenly luminaries and earthly seasons keep a fixed, reliable order: “they all rise and set in order… and transgress not against their appointed order.” It points to the visible steadiness of sun, moon, stars, summer and winter as evidence of a single sustaining will behind creation.

This passage uses observation of regular cycles to argue for divine governance rather than chance, a move also central to Augustine’s Confessions where he reads the book of nature as testimony to God. The point is practical: examine the ordered motions and you find grounds to trust a creator who upholds them.
