The Book of Enoch · 108 of 109

Chapter CVII. Fragment of the Book of Noah

1.And I saw written on them that generation upon generation shall transgress, till a generation of righteousness arises, and transgression is destroyed and sin passes away from the earth, and all manner of good comes upon it.

2.And now, my son, go and make known to thy son Lamech that this son, which has been born, is in truth his son, and that (this) is no lie.’

3.And when Methuselah had heard the words of his father Enoch—for he had shown to him everything in secret—he returned and showed (them) to him and called the name of that son Noah; for he will comfort the earth after all the destruction.

Asked of Guide

Why does Enoch tell Methuselah to name his son Noah and call him a comforter?

Enoch shows Methuselah a vision that future “generation upon generation shall transgress” until “a generation of righteousness arises,” and he links the newborn to that turning. The chapter says Methuselah names the child Noah because “he will comfort the earth after all the destruction,” framing Noah as the agent who brings restoration after widespread sin and ruin.

This fragment treats Noah as a promised remedy embedded in lineage and revelation: a continuation of Enoch’s hidden teachings revealed to his son, then passed to Methuselah. That same salvific role for a descendant echoes Genesis, where Noah preserves life and renews the world after the flood.
