Job 25

1.Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said, 2. Dominion and fear are with him, he maketh peace in his high places. 3. Is there any number of his armies? and upon whom doth not his light arise? 4. How then can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman? 5. Behold even to the moon, and it shineth not; yea, the stars are not pure in his sight. 6. How much less man, that is a worm? and the son of man, which is a worm?

Asked of Guide

Why does Bildad call humans 'worms' in this speech to Job?

Bildad describes God’s transcendent sovereignty — “Dominion and fear are with him” — and argues that divine majesty exposes human smallness. He points to cosmic signs, saying even the moon and stars “are not pure in his sight,” to show humanity’s moral and ontological insufficiency before God.

The chapter insists on disproportion: God’s light rises on all, yet people remain unable to stand utterly “justified with God.” This argument echoes Psalms’ language about God’s holiness and human frailty, especially Psalm 8 and 144 where human creatures are placed under God’s vast greatness.
